STATEHOUSE – State Representative David Frizzell (R-Indianapolis) authored legislation that could make certain healthcare services more accessible to Hoosiers. House Bill (HB) 1145 passed out of the House unanimously and will now go to the Senate for further consideration.
“Improving quality of life continues to be a top priority, and we are always looking for ways to make healthcare services more accessible to Hoosiers,” said Rep. Frizzell. “Working towards this goal, House Bill 1145 makes it easier for doctors and healthcare professionals to volunteer their time, benefiting more Hoosiers in need.”
HB 1145 requires the Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) to establish a process through which volunteer health service locations are approved. Volunteers practicing at approved locations would be eligible for immunity from certain civil liabilities. Additionally, HB 1145 requires individuals, who meet the criteria for those immunities, to provide a record and results of laboratory and imaging based screenings and tests to the patient.
“This bill removes some of the restrictions that prevent healthcare professionals from volunteering their time. It is important that we create an environment in Indiana that encourages volunteerism, rather than prevents it, especially when it pertains to the well-being of Hoosiers,” said Rep. Frizzell.
The bill also requires the PLA to track all service provider volunteers. There are six types of providers that would be entered into the proposed volunteer registry: physicians, physician assistants, dentists, nurses, advance practice nurses and optometrists
