STATEHOUSE (April 4, 2017) – State Rep. Greg Beumer (R-Modoc) recently at the Statehouse led the Indiana House of Representatives in honoring local Vietnam War veteran Charles Edwin Engle.
Beumer is also urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to name a section of U.S Highway 27 as the Captain Charles Edwin Engle Memorial Mile.
“Cap. Charles Engle is an example of dedication to our country’s freedom,” Beumer said. “By naming a road after him we can memorialize a hero and inspire future generations. I hope that people will someday drive by and see Cap. Engle’s name on the memorial mile, research the story behind his name and become inspired to emulate this true American hero.”
Charles Engle, born in Lynn, Indiana, served in the United States Air Force upon graduation from Purdue University. Engle served on a tour in South Vietnam where he then volunteered to participate in a clandestine flying program in the “neutral” country of Laos, with the “Raven” group.
According to Beumer, Engle saved many lives while in action and was awarded the Silver Star.
The Indiana Department of Transportation will now consider Beumer’s request to name the local roadway after Engle.
