STATEHOUSE (Oct. 10, 2019) – Berne will receive $611,222 in state matching grants to accelerate road and bridge improvements, according to State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne).
This local funding is part of the nearly $100 million recently awarded to Indiana cities, towns and counties through the Community Crossings Matching Grant program. Now in its fourth year, Lehman voted in support of the law establishing the program. The grants are made available through the Indiana Department of Transportation and funded through the state budget.
“Our roads and bridges require constant maintenance,” Lehman said. “Through this state and local partnership, community leaders can tap this resource to meet their unique infrastructure needs as they see fit. The program is running strong, with road construction happening from one end of the state to the other.”
In addition to Berne, Geneva was awarded $126,262 and Monroe received $46,767.
Lehman said grant funding can be used toward road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage. Smaller municipalities must provide a match of 25% in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50% match.
Since 2017, state road investment is up 50% as Indiana has dedicated $3 billion to road and bridge projects across the state.
