STATEHOUSE (Sept. 27, 2017) — State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) visited Concordia Lutheran High School and Lutheran South Unity School in Fort Wayne on Wednesday, where he observed classrooms and discussed the state’s school choice policies.

“There’s a lot to learn from being inside Hoosier classrooms, and I always enjoy spending time with students and educators at their schools,” said Behning, chair of the House Committee on Education. “Some of our best education policies stem from conversations that happen in the classroom. Seeing kids and teachers interacting and learning together offers insight on how our innovative education programs are performing.”

During his morning visit at Concordia Lutheran High School, Behning spent time with students and community leaders discussing school choice. Behning said school choice has been growing in popularity on the national level with many states looking to Indiana as a model for future programs.

“We are thankful for the support that Rep. Behning and legislators like him provide for Concordia through the Indiana Choice Scholarship program,” said Mychal Thom, CLHS Head of School. “With more than half of our families in the program coming through the Lutheran grade schools, it has helped to ease their financial burden, and allows others more options when choosing a quality education.”

Behning took the “Experience the Phoenix” student-led tour of Lutheran South Unity School, interacting with students and teachers about their time at their school. The day concluded with a meeting with Principal Krista Nagy, School Board Chair Greg Clark and other school leaders to discuss how state education policies impact and empower Hoosier schools.

“We are honored to host Rep. Behning and thank him for his School Choice leadership,” Nagy said. “Our families, including my own, appreciate the opportunity to choose the best school for our children. Our kids get to grow where we choose to plant them.”

As a state lawmaker, Behning has championed school choice legislation to ensure students have access to an education that best fits their needs, regardless of their zip code or income. During the 2016-17 school year, 462 students from Concordia Lutheran High School and Lutheran South Unity School participated in Indiana’s Choice Scholarship program.
