STATEHOUSE (Jan. 17, 2019) – Key House committees advanced State Rep. Bob Behning’s (R-Indianapolis) legislation that would provide more career opportunities for educators.

Behning’s legislation would provide incentives for schools to implement career ladders and mentorship programs for veteran educators to grow professionally and help new teachers early in their careers.

“Educators often cite lack of support during their first years in the classroom as a reason for leaving the profession,” said Behning, chair of the House Education Committee. “With these career ladders, new teachers would be mentored, giving experienced educators opportunities to earn more while taking on leadership roles without leaving the classroom.”

Behning said this legislation stems from a collaborative effort with the Indiana State Teachers Association, Teach Plus and Stand for Children to help elevate the teaching profession and put more money in teachers’ pockets.
