Legislation that limits effects of
ISTEP scores passes out of the House

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 12, 2016) – State Rep. Bob Behning's (R-Indianapolis) bill decoupling teacher bonuses from the 2015 ISTEP scores passed out of the House of Representatives today by a vote of 95-1.

“I’m pleased to see this legislation is moving quickly through the process. It is important that Hoosier educators are not penalized for anticipated drops in scores during this transition to higher standards,” said Behning, who serves as the chairman of the House Education Committee. “It is my hope that we can alleviate concerns for educators when it comes to their evaluations and performance pay.”

Behning explained that ISTEP scores will only be utilized when they benefit the educator. This allows teachers who saw an improvement in their ISTEP scores to receive recognition in their evaluations.

The bill now heads to the Senate for further consideration. To learn more about this legislation, click here.
