Bills supporting educators
and schools signed into law
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan 21, 2016) — Gov. Mike Pence signed into law two bills today ensuring teachers and schools will not be punished for the expected drop in 2015 ISTEP scores.
State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) authored House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1003, which decouples teacher bonuses from 2015 ISTEP scores. Behning also sponsored Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 200 which prevents schools from receiving an A-F grade lower than their 2013-14 grade.
“No educator should feel they are being unfairly penalized during this transition to higher standards and a tougher test,” said Behning, chairman of the House Education Committee. “After hearing concerns from both educators and administrators, we knew that action needed to be taken. I am pleased both the House and the Senate were able to work quickly to alleviate concerns for teachers and schools.”
