STATEHOUSE (Oct. 26, 2023) – Bartholomew County lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates to apply online for an internship at the Indiana Statehouse before the Oct. 31 deadline.
The House of Representatives offers paid spring internships to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns will receive $900 biweekly while working at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis during the 2024 legislative session, which begins in January and concludes mid-March.
State Rep. Ryan Lauer (R-Columbus) said interested Hoosiers should visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and complete the application before Oct. 31.
"Employers look to hire staff who bring skills like communication, time management and prioritization to the table," Lauer said. "This internship offers opportunities to develop these skills and learn new ones, so that students can be better prepared to hit the ground running after graduation."
Positions are available in legislative operations where interns work directly with constituents and help track committee activity. The communications department is looking for interns to help write press releases and email newsletters, and work with social media, graphic design and audio/video production. The policy department is also in need of interns to help research, track and analyze legislation.
"Intern positions are open to students with different backgrounds and varying interests," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "As interns work with members of the media, help constituents or research different topics, they will build their confidence, develop new skills and add to their portfolio of work."
Internships are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"As a former intern, I know firsthand what an amazing experience this can be for Hoosiers who want to put their classroom skills to work," said State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon). "With the deadline fast approaching, I encourage Southeast Indiana students to take time and apply today."
"There is so much value in this type of hands-on experience," said State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour). "With a House internship, young Hoosiers can work in a professional environment while learning about their state government. It's a great opportunity and I hope to welcome local students to the Statehouse come January."
