STATEHOUSE (Dec. 9, 2022) – Local lawmakers recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. Ryan Lauer (R-Columbus) will serve as vice chair of the House Roads and Transportation Committee, and as a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, and the House Family, Children and Human Affairs Committee.

"These assignments present great opportunities to really focus on important topics impacting Hoosiers," Lauer said. " Whether examining policies related to roads, vulnerable children, families, veterans or public safety, I look forward to serving on these committees and ensuring the voices in our district are heard."

State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville), elected to her first term in November, will serve as a member of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Local Government. These committees will begin their work with the start of the 2023 legislative session.

"Supporting public safety and law enforcement are top priorities for me," Meltzer said. "As an attorney, I look forward to leaning on my experience to help dive into the complex issues affecting our criminal justice system, like mental health and addiction, and working hard to identify ways our state can improve."

State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) received an appointment to serve as vice chair of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.

"As a former Marine, I understand the challenges facing veterans and their families," Lucas said "There is always work to do to further support those who have sacrificed for our country. I remain committed to working with my fellow committee members to better serve those who served our great nation."

Lucas will also serve as a member of the House Committee on Local Government and the House Public Policy Committee. Lucas said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for session at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
