STATEHOUSE (Nov. 7, 2024) – Bartholomew County legislators said local communities will soon be on the move with more road and bridge projects with the help of recently released state funding.
Funding is available through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, which can be used for road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements and other projects. A total of 223 communities across the state will receive more than $139 million in state matching grants.
"Every day, thousands of drivers travel on our roads, so we need to keep our highways, bridges and local streets maintained," said State Rep. Ryan Lauer (R-Columbus). "Through this partnership with the state, our communities are more empowered to take action and address local transportation needs."
"Our road conditions – from our neighborhood streets to our country roads – affects us all," said State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour). "One of my top priorities continues to be making sure our infrastructure is safe and effective, so that we can keep our people, businesses and economy moving. This state matching grant program is a great tool for small and large communities to complete projects faster and better address road and bridge maintenance."
Area grant recipients include:
"Hoosiers and visitors passing through both need one thing: safe and efficient roads," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "Through Community Crossings, anyone using our streets can feel more secure about their condition."
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.8 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
