STATEHOUSE (Nov. 3, 2023) – Significant state funding is in route to local communities to help complete road and bridge projects, according to area legislators.

State funding is available for local projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, including road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, over 180 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $91 million in state matching grants.

"As the Crossroads of America, it's important our state and local communities continue to work together to provide safe and efficient infrastructure, and maintain our longstanding reputation," said State Rep. Ryan Lauer (R-Columbus). "Community Crossings has helped earn our top infrastructure ranking among all other states and boost our quality of life."

Area grant recipients include Columbus ($250,571), Hope ($103,075) and Edinburgh ($1 million).

"Roads are part of everyday life in Indiana, and it's important that they're maintained for Hoosiers and businesses," said State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon). "This state funding opens the door to vital repairs and improvements, which might not have happened as quickly without it."

"It's important that our roads and bridges are safe and functioning to keep Hoosiers and our economy moving," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "Community Crossings is a great tool for local communities to utilize because it helps stretch budgets farther and allows for necessary infrastructure improvements to be made sooner."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"As a small-business owner, I know how much working Hoosiers rely on roads to make a living," said State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour). "Community Crossings ensures small and large communities can make investments in infrastructure to keep businesses and people moving."
