As the leaves turn colors and temperatures drop, it's time to kick off one of Indiana's greatest outdoor traditions – deer hunting. More than 300,000 hunters will get out in nature and enjoy the season, which began in September and runs until Jan. 31, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

A quick reminder of important safety trips can help prevent accidents and injuries out in the woods regardless of experience.

Hoosiers should be aware of whether they are hunting on private or public land. I authored a law authorizing the use of purple paint to mark private property. Land owners can mark a tree or post with purple paint to let people know entry is denied, serving as a no trespassing sign.

Even when hunting in a public area, such as the nearby Hoosier National Forest, be aware of trail hikers and campers. When it comes to using a firearm, always know the target and what's beyond it.

Hunters should always let friends or family know where they plan to hunt and their expected return time. If cell phone coverage will be an issue, consider investing in a satellite phone in case of an emergency, especially when hunting alone. Be sure to wear solid hunter orange, as required by law.

Falling from tree stands accounts for the majority of our state’s hunting injuries, so it's necessary to inspect your stand equipment prior to use. Only healthy trees, free of any damage, should be used. Haul lines should be used to pull up gear, bow or firearm, and make sure firearms are unloaded.

Before hunting, Hoosiers must obtain a license, available at hunting.IN.gov, and complete a one-time hunter education class prior to purchase. To sign up for the online course, visit www.hunter-ed.com/indiana.

Indiana has multiple hunting seasons, which determine what animal to hunt and what you can use while hunting. Currently, we are in bow hunting deer season, which began on Oct. 1 and lasts until Jan. 1. Firearm deer season is Nov. 12-27.
