Bartels: Intern with the Indiana House of Representatives

I would like everyone in our community to be aware of an exciting opportunity with the Indiana House of Representatives. The House Republican Internship Program offers paid, spring semester internships at the Statehouse in Indianapolis to college students and recent graduates. This internship is a unique opportunity to build practical knowledge of state government, gain useful skills and develop professional relationships.

Interns work with state legislators and staff to gain hands-on experience while learning about their state government. Positions are open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Students can apply for internships in a variety of areas focusing on legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy or fiscal policy. While participants will be involved in the legislative process, no previous political or government experience is necessary.

The positions are full-time, Monday through Friday, lasting from January through mid-March. Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

I highly encourage students in our area to consider applying for this program. It’s particularly exciting to see individuals from our community interning at the Statehouse, and I would like to see more of them join us for the upcoming legislative session starting in January. We have a number of qualified students, and I know Indiana would benefit from their talents and abilities.

Many members of the full-time House Republican staff and even some legislators and mayors are former House interns. Other interns have launched careers and found success not only in government, but also in the private sector.

If you believe someone you know would be a good fit for the program, please encourage them to apply.

The application deadline for the House Republican Internship Program is Oct. 31, but don’t wait to apply as spots will fill up quickly.
