STATEHOUSE (Sept. 29, 2021) – Centerville's Edna Cox was among 21 older Indiana residents honored with this year's Golden Hoosier Award for her volunteer service in the community, according to State Reps. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond) and Tom Saunders (R-Lewisville).

Cox has served Centerville's homebound residents for over 35 years, delivering meals and groceries to residents through Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. She is also involved with the local 4-H program, both as a longtime judge and by serving food to visitors. When not delivering meals to those in need or judging various 4-H entries, Cox is serving food and tidying up at the Centerville-Abington Senior Center.

"Edna has been a welcoming figure in Centerville for many years," Barrett said. "Whether she's at the senior center calling bingo and serving meals, or taking an active role in the local 4-H program, Edna exemplifies someone with a public-service mindset who is a perfect fit for the Golden Hoosier Award."

The Golden Hoosier Award was established in 2008 to honor older Hoosiers whose volunteer work and commitment to their communities have made a positive impact. To be eligible, nominees must be age 65 or older and have volunteered for at least the past three years.

"Edna's dedication to connecting our homebound neighbors with needed resources is one of the many reasons why she embodies the Golden Hoosier Award," Saunders said. "She deserves to be recognized and is an inspiration in our community."

The award is presented by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch in partnership with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, and is the highest honor given to Hoosier seniors. To date, more than 260 citizens have received the Golden Hoosier Award.

This year's Golden Hoosier Award recipients were honored through a video ceremony, which can be viewed at in.gov/lg.
