STATEHOUSE (Oct. 23, 2020) – The city of Richmond recently received a $220,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to expand recycling efforts, according to State Rep. Brad Barrett (R-Richmond).
The Richmond Sanitary District received funding to purchase a recycling truck and additional curbside recycling containers to expand the city's curbside recycling program to include a source-separated cardboard collection. Barrett said the city projects these updates will help Richmond double the amount of cardboard diverted from the landfill, resulting in 328 tons recycled yearly.
"This grant funding provides our community a great opportunity to expand our recycling efforts," Barrett said. "We can reduce hundreds of tons of waste each year, leading to a healthier environment for Richmond."
IDEM's Recycling Market Development Program awarded a total of $1 million in grant funding to eight organizations across the state for a variety of projects that will increase recycling markets, education and collection efforts.
According to Barrett, businesses, local government, schools and non-profit organizations located and operating in Indiana are eligible to apply for funding. Applicants may seek grant funding starting at $10,000 and up to $500,000, with a 50 percent required cash match.
