Expanding the availability of rapid testing is necessary to help slow the spread of the virus and get Indiana back on track. A new large-scale COVID-19 testing effort is underway for symptomatic Hoosiers across Indiana, and new testing sites are opening in Warrick County and the surrounding area in the coming weeks.
The Indiana State Department of Health is partnering with OptumServe Health to test those experiencing symptoms, close contacts of positive cases and residents of congregate living settings. According to the Indiana State Department of Health, 20 out of 50 testing sites are in Indiana National Guard armories with the closest to us at this time being in Jasper and Vincennes. Since rapid testing isn't easily accessible in Warrick County, our community is in the next wave of testing sites to open.
Once all 50 testing sites are open, the state health department estimates as many as 6,600 Hoosiers can be tested each day. Individuals are not charged when tested and do not need insurance, but those who have private insurance are encouraged to bring that information with them.
Optum testing sites are open eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, and only test Hoosiers by appointment. To sign up for an appointment, visit lhi.care/covidtesting to complete a short questionnaire and see if testing is recommended. Based on an individual's symptoms, they may be directed to register for an appointment date and time. On average, results will be available within 48 hours. Hoosiers who test positive will receive a phone call, and those who test negative will be notified via email or text.
Stage two of Gov. Eric Holcomb's five-step plan, which most of the state is currently in, lifts stay-at-home restrictions, but everyone should still social distance. When taking a walk at Friedman Park, or biking around Blue Grass Nature Preserve, or window shopping in our local communities, please make sure to continue following the CDC's recommendations. Being outside helps our physical, mental and emotional health.
While we are making progress, let's stay healthy and continue practicing good hygiene.
