Students and teachers are working hard in the classroom and remotely to make it another great school year. To help with internet connectivity and invest in needed equipment for students and staff, South Spencer County and Warrick County School Corps. recently received more than $1 million in federal grant funding.
This investment will help the nearly 11,000 local students in 21 schools as they continue to learn and thrive. Grant applications could be submitted by single Indiana school corporations or a combination of eligible education entities. South Spencer County School Corp. received $142,275. Warrick County School Corp., St. John the Baptist and Evansville Christian School in Newburgh received a total of $903,180.
The additional funding can help schools with their unique needs, whether it's increasing device access, internet connectivity, and educator training and development. To serve the most rural parts of our counties, some schools can also use the funds to set up mobile WiFi devices with subscription plans in addition to community hotspots.
After an evaluation of 257 applications by the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Indiana State Board of Education, schools statewide received a total of $61 million through the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund, which was created by the federal CARES Act.
Whether learning in-person or remotely, the Indiana Department of Education offers a number of free online resources. Students can access educational activities sorted by grade level and subject area at doe.in.gov. Free math and science tutoring is also available for Hoosiers in grades 4-12 through Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Students can turn to AskRose.org or call 877-ASK-ROSE to work through homework assignments.
