STATEHOUSE (April 27, 2026) – State Rep. Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) and the Indiana Department of Transportation held a ceremony to rename a portion of U.S. 41 to honor fallen Newton County Sheriff Cpl. Brandon Schreiber.
Aylesworth authored a resolution during this year's legislative session to rename the U.S. 41 bridge over the Kankakee River the "Corporal Brandon Schreiber Memorial Bridge" to memorialize his sacrifice and love for the outdoors.
Schreiber, a Crown Point native, joined the Newton County Sheriff's Department full time in 2019 after serving as a deputy for three years. On Sept. 1, 2024, he was wounded in pursuit of an armed suspect fleeing over the Illinois border and later succumbed to his injuries after 10 days at the Carle Trauma Center in Urbana, Ill.
"With the renaming of the Kankakee River bridge, the sacrifices of Cpl. Schrieber will be memorialized in a way that reflects his passions," Aylesworth said. "My heart goes out to his young family, and I hope the bridge remains a source of peace and remembrance of the life and service of Cpl. Schrieber."
Before he joined the Newton County Sheriff's Department in 2019, Schreiber served as a deputy marshal with the Morocco Town Marshal's Office and as a volunteer firefighter with the Kentland-Jefferson Township Fire Department.
