STATEHOUSE (Aug. 25, 2016) — Local communities received state matching grants this week to improve roads and bridges, according to State Rep. Mike Aylesworth (R-Hebron).

This year, Aylesworth supported legislation establishing the state’s Community Crossings matching grant fund, which will provide about $160 million to Indiana cities, towns and counties on a 50/50 matching basis.

“Investing in Indiana’s state and local infrastructure was a top goal and accomplishment of the 2016 session,” Aylesworth said. “By providing these grants, counties, cities and towns will be able to address local road and bridge improvements more quickly.”

As part of the program, Lake County and Porter County each received $1 million for road and bridge improvements.

In addition, 23 local communities were awarded grants, including Beverly Shores ($35,141), Burns Harbor ($96,856), Chesterton ($156,562), Crown Point ($1 million), Dune Acres ($50,013), Dyer ($325,000), East Chicago ($935,764), Gary ($1 million), Griffith ($800,000), Hammond ($1 million), Hebron ($150,600), Highland ($472,671), Hobart ($1 million), Lowell ($1 million), Munster ($481,074), North Liberty ($35,840), Portage ($900,954), Schererville (426,500), Schneider ($59,915), Town of Porter ($401,065), Valparaiso ($1 million), Winfield ($50,300) and Whiting ($333,850).

On Wednesday, INDOT announced 119 Northern Indiana cities, towns and counties were awarded nearly $52 million through the fund. Projects that are eligible for funding through Community Crossings include road resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, road reconstruction, resurfacing, and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance in connection with road projects. Material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations were also eligible for funds.
