STATEHOUSE (Dec. 27, 2017) — Fort Wayne state representatives are encouraging area students to apply to the 2018 Indiana House of Representatives Page Program.
Pages have an opportunity to join representatives during the legislative session and tour the governor’s office, the Indiana Supreme Court and the House and Senate chambers.
State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) said pages will assist him in the House Chamber and aid his staff with day-to-day duties.
“This experience is invaluable to a young person,” Carbaugh said. “It provides them a glimpse of how laws are created.”
Pages will be able to shadow their state representative, and see what a day in the life of a legislator is like, according to State Rep. Dave Heine (R-New Haven). Those activities may include floor sessions and committee meetings.
“This is a great opportunity for students to learn, while at the Statehouse, more about what goes on in the state legislature,” Heine said. “This program should enhance their knowledge of how our state government operates.”
Page slots fill up fast, and State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said interested students should sign up quickly. Generally, the House in is session during 2018 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays with the occasional Wednesday.
“I strongly encourage students in our community to apply,” Morris said. “I always look forward to hosting them.”
To be a page, applicants should be between the ages of 13 and 18. Student pages receive an excused absence from school and groups can sign up to participate together.
The 2018 legislative session begins Wednesday, Jan. 3, and must conclude by March 14. Morris said he encourages participants to apply early online at www.indianahouserepublicans.com/pageprogram or by calling 800-382-9841.
