STATEHOUSE (Dec. 6, 2022) – More than $3.2 million is headed to local communities to accelerate road and bridge improvements, according to area legislators.

State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) said the local funding from the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program is for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage, and can cover material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations. In total, 229 towns, cities and counties will receive over $119 million in state matching grants.

"These grants continue to make a significant difference across our state, and in our local communities," Carbaugh said. "Roads and bridges are an integral part of our daily lives as we rely on them to get to work, school, and so much more."

Area grant recipients include:

  • Grabill, $1 million;
  • Huntertown, $944,400;
  • Leo-Cedarville, $140,216;
  • Monroeville, $576,451; and
  • New Haven, $594,550.

State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) said smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. To date, Hoosier communities are on the receiving end of more than $1 billion in Community Crossings Matching Grants, established in 2016.

"Communities should utilize and take advantage of this grant program," Heine said. "This is a great way to tackle some of the deterioration our roads and bridges are seeing. I encourage all county and local officials to explore how this program can help their communities."

"Our state's economy relies heavily on a strong transportation infrastructure," said State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne). "Having reliable roads and bridges makes it easier for companies across Indiana to efficiently move goods and connect supply chains. This is especially important here in northeast Indiana, as we are a hub to many major Midwestern cities that are within a 3- or 4-hour drive."

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, which oversees and awards the grants, the next call for projects is expected in January. Awards are released two times a year. More information can be found at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings or by emailing LPAQuestions@indot.in.gov.
