STATEHOUSE (April 10, 2024) – Shelby County and Shelbyville can roll forward with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by local legislators.

A total of 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Shelby County will receive $999,232 and Shelbyville will receive $444,069 in grant funding. Funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items.

"Whether you're going to work or school, the quality of our infrastructure matters," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "This funding helps our communities stretch local dollars further and move ahead on improvements faster than they could otherwise."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"Having safe and reliable roads supports our residents, local businesses, and farmers who live and work here," said Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville) "As costs of construction and maintenance continue to go up, the Community Crossings Matching Grant is an increasingly valuable tool for counties, cities and towns."

"Indiana is one of the top-rated states for transportation, and this program is a big reason why," said State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown), a member of the House Roads and Transportation Committee. "This grant offers much-needed funding for communities to ensure local roadways are safe and efficient for years to come."
