Note to the press: Please include the following statements from State Reps. Ben Smaltz (R-Auburn), Dave Abbott (R-Rome City), Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne), Dave Heine (R-New Haven), Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne) and Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) in your coverage of the decision by a federal judge to issue a preliminary injunction blocking House Enrolled Act 1211 from taking effect Monday, July 1. The law prohibits the practice of dismemberment abortions in Indiana.

STATEHOUSE (July 2, 2019) –

State Rep. Ben Smaltz:

“Indiana’s unborn could have been better protected starting today. While I am disappointed in the court’s decision and believe this is an issue of states’ rights, the remainder of the bill is intact and I am hopeful that the attorney general will vigorously appeal this ruling. In light of this recent action, we now have a greater duty to continue to be the voice for those unable to speak for themselves.”

State Rep. Dave Abbott:

“Blocking this law from taking effect and allowing this vile practice to continue shows a complete disregard for human life. When they find out what exactly this procedure entails, most people are horrified and outraged. Although this decision is not final, it is up to all of us to defend these children.”

State Rep. Martin Carbaugh:

“Dismemberment abortions are horrific procedures performed while the baby is alive in the mother’s womb. This law to end this disgusting practice and save innocent lives received bipartisan support. I firmly believe this law to be the next step in protect the unborn and holding it back puts the lives of future Hoosiers at risk.”

State Rep. Dave Heine:

“Like many Hoosiers who value life, I am extremely disappointed by the courts’ decision to allow this practice to continue. Dismemberment abortions are disgusting and cruel to an unborn child capable of feeling pain. I will continue to support policies that protect the unborn and fight these inhumane acts.”

State Rep. Chris Judy:

“It is disheartening to see a policy to protect the lives of unborn children be struck down. I am incredibly disappointed by the courts decision to continue to allow this barbaric procedure that is gruesome and a degradation to the sanctity of human life. I will continue to support policies that protect the humanity of the unborn.”

State Rep. Bob Morris:

“Any threat to the life of an innocent child is appalling. Blocking this law from taking effect is a danger to the unborn. It is important to remember there are alternatives to abortion, such as adoption and Indiana has worked to expand the availability of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, which allow a parent to anonymously surrender their infant without prosecution.”
