Area lawmakers invite students to page at the Statehouse

STATEHOUSE (Dec. 19, 2018) – Area lawmakers encourage students who want to learn more about state government to participate in the Indiana House Page Program during the 2019 legislative session.

According to State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne), those who are between the ages of 13 to 18 can spend a day at the Statehouse in Indianapolis helping staff and local legislators, touring government offices, and learning about the legislative process.

“This is a meaningful opportunity for students,” Carbaugh said. “Spending a day in the Statehouse introduces students to government outside of the knowledge they have learned in the classroom. They’re able to return to school with a real-world experience that’s likely a bit different than what they expected.”

State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) said student pages receive an excused absence from school and groups can participate together.

“It’s always great to see students from our area arrive in groups to the Statehouse,” Heine said. “We’ve welcomed Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA students and groups from schools that travel to Indianapolis together.”

Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said page opportunities fill up fast and recommends applying sooner rather than later. The 2019 legislative session begins Thursday, Jan. 3, and must conclude by April 30. Pages are able to select from available dates during that time period.

“The sooner students get their applications in, the more likely they will get their preferred date,” Morris said. “These spots typically disappear quickly, and you don’t want to miss out on such a great educational opportunity.”
