STATEHOUSE (Sept. 27, 2023) – The Arc of Shelby County, a chapter of The Arc of Indiana, recently presented State Rep. Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville) with the Legislator of the Year Award for his work on a new law promoting job opportunities for Hoosiers with disabilities.
During his freshman year as a state legislator, Greene supported a new law giving employers an added incentive to hire more Hoosiers with physical or intellectual and developmental disabilities.
"As both a legislator and a father of a child with autism, supporting more opportunities for Hoosiers with disabilities is a personal mission," said Greene, who crafted the bill language that was later included in the new law. "I'm grateful for this recognition and I look forward to continuing to help those with physical and intellectual challenges so that they have every opportunity to succeed."
Greene said with the new law, employers that receive a referral from a vocational rehabilitation services program for individuals with a disability and hires them will be eligible to receive a tax credit. The credit amount is determined based on the employee's tenure, and will be worth 50% of their wages by the third year and onward. Tax credits will apply for those who hire a person with disabilities after Dec. 31, 2023.
"When you have a loved one with a disability, you are often worried about how they will find meaningful, gainful employment," Greene said. "Through this new law, Hoosiers with physical or intellectual and developmental disabilities could have more opportunities to pursue and excel in the workplace."
The Arc of Indiana is an organization that works to create employment opportunities for Hoosiers with disabilities. The group holds more than 40 chapters covering 68 counties in the state, which includes coverage in both Johnson and Shelby counties.
