STATEHOUSE (Sept. 12, 2023) – Allen County lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.
"For college students and recent graduates, this internship is a great opportunity to cultivate valuable skills," Carbaugh said. "House interns have the chance to network with leaders, peers and business professionals from across the state."
State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.
"No matter your major, Hoosiers looking to get one step ahead of others beginning their careers can take advantage of this internship," Heine said. "While at the Statehouse, interns can work with constituents, connect with members of the media, and help research and analyze policy."
Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) said interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"Interns are a crucial part of our team, and working with staff and legislators is a great first step in taking classroom skills into the real world," Morris said. "Starting positions like this one are essential to building students' soft skills and hard skills, which will serve them well in the future."
According to State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.
"Internships are a great way for students to learn what it's like working in a professional setting," Judy said. "Assisting staff members and lawmakers helps them develop skills that are useful in any job."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
