STATEHOUSE (Dec. 16, 2022) – Allen County lawmakers recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.
House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) was reappointed as chair of the House Insurance Committee and will also serve on the House Education and Public Health committees.
"Exploring avenues to drive down Hoosiers' health care costs remains a priority and I look forward to those discussions," Carbaugh said. "We will continue to support parents and students, and examine how to expand work-based learning opportunities for our high school students so they can be better prepared for jobs available upon graduation."
State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) will again serve on the House Ways and Means Committee, and as chair of the Local Government and Finance Subcommittee. Heine was also reappointed to the House Agricultural and Rural Development, and Roads and Transportation committees.
"Crafting the state's two-year budget will take priority this year," Heine said. "We want to make sure our spending practices are in line with what Hoosiers have come to expect, and that's ensuring we remain fiscally responsible and prudent with our funding decisions."
State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne) will also serve on the House Ways and Means Committee. Judy was also assigned to the House Family, Children and Human Services, and Veterans Affairs and Public Safety committees. Judy said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.
"Hoosiers live within their means and budget for expenses, and they expect the same from us at the Statehouse," Judy said. "As part of the Ways and Means Committee, those principles are always front of mind when making budgetary decisions."
State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) will once again chair the House Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development Committee. Morris will also serve on the House Utilities, Energy and Telecommunications Committee.
"The government's role can sometimes make or break a small business," said Morris, a small-business owner. "We want to try and minimize costly and complex regulations for those owners while simultaneously cutting unneeded red tape."
House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for session at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
