STATEHOUSE (August 23, 2021) – The Scherrer family farm recently received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award for being in operation since 1900, according to State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) and State Sen. Dennis Kruse (R-Auburn).
"As a member of a family that farmed for four generations, I know first-hand the amount of work it takes to keep one going, and I'd be the first to tell you it's not easy," Heine said. "Successfully keeping a farm going for over 120 years takes drive, determination and proper planning. What the Scherrer's have done is very special."
These farming families were among 73 recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
"Recognizing this family for their generations of hard work is the least we can do," Kruse said. "It is not every day you have family operations consistently producing for 100 years or more, and I am thankful to have them in our community."
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial awards.
