STATEHOUSE — State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis), Chairman of the House Education Committee, authored House Bill 1205, which was heard in committee Wednesday. The bills call for greater transparency in superintendent pay.
“The issue of superintendent pay was brought up at the end of last session, when we learned the contract details for Wayne Township’s Superintendent and that many provisions were not financially in the best interest of the school,” said Rep. Behning. “The issue was studied in an interim committee and it was determined that the best way to address this issue is to have greater transparency when these contracts are being negotiated.”
The bill would requires a school corporation to give public notice and hold a public hearing detailing total dollar amounts of the proposed employment contract at least 7 days prior to entering into a contract with a school superintendent.
The bill passed out of committee with four amendments being adopted and a vote of 8-3.
“I believe this bill will help ensure that superintendent packages are developed with the best interest of the tax payer in mind,” said Rep. Behning. “The passage of this bill out of committee today is a significant step towards making superintendent pay more transparent.”
