This is part two of a four part series about our 2015 legislative accomplishments. This week focuses on veterans.
In my first installment of this series highlighting our legislative accomplishments, I discussed a variety of ways we worked to improve education in our community. For this installment and with Memorial Day around the corner, I will discuss what was achieved to benefit Indiana's veterans.
This session I coauthored the Servicemember's Civil Relief Act (SCRA) which allows members of the Indiana National Guard to suspend or postpone certain obligations, such as lease termination fees or cell phone bills, while they are deployed or on active duty. SCRA will remove some of the burden our service members face while defending our country or when called to serve.
I also supported legislation providing employers the option to adopt a voluntary veterans' preference policy for hiring, promoting or retaining a veteran in private employment. Veterans have sacrificed so much for our state and country, and this legislation is another way to show appreciation for their service.
I have always had an active interest in lowering the veteran's unemployment rate and finding new opportunities to support these heroes. This is why I was proud to partner with Northeast Indiana Works to host the Veteran's 1st Hiring Event. This year, I was pleased by the turnout of employers and veterans, knowing that the event was helping our service members find positions that fit their skill sets.
I was proud to support legislation and advocate for Hoosier veterans and service members. Look for the third part of this four part series focusing on our public safety initiatives.
