Adding protections for Hoosier service members

A recent legislative measure that I co-authored will further protect our state's service members by allowing them to suspend or postpone certain obligations while they are on active duty. Titled the Service Member's Civil Relief Act (SCRA), all military members including Indiana's National Guardsmen and Reservists are covered under this legislation that passed out of the House unanimously.

House Bill 1456 also includes protections from state-specific obligations not covered at the federal level. This unburdens our service members who are defending our country as they will be able to suspend debt collections, foreclosures, evictions and more. While brave Hoosiers serve our country, they deserve to be able to focus on the tasks at hand.

Additionally, the bill will help protect service members from scams and will require the National Guard to develop a website concerning the SCRA. The goal of the legislation is to relieve unnecessary stress that could be placed on our Hoosier military members.

I am a constant advocate for our veterans and current service men and women. If you have any questions regarding this legislation or any other concerns, do not hesitate to contact my office using the information provided below.
