Prior to attending law school, Steuerwald utilized his Masters in Criminal Justice by serving as a probation officer for two years. While attending Indiana University-Indianapolis, he served as an intern in the Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office. Upon graduation from law school, he joined his present law firm and has been there since 1981.
His firm has represented various units of local government including towns, libraries and townships. This includes the Hendricks County Board of Commissioners, the Hendricks County Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals, the Hendricks County Health Department, Hendricks Regional Health and the Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District.
In 1996, Steuerwald received the Hendricks County Outstanding Economic Development Award. He is a certified probation officer with the State of Indiana Department of Corrections. He is also a registered mediator and received a Certificate of Recognition in Family Mediation Training through the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum.
Steuerwald has focused on implementing laws to keep Hoosiers safe. He authored the law providing the foundation for a revision of Indiana's criminal code, which had not been revised in over 30 years. The new code provides for certainty in sentencing and keeps the most violent offenders in prison longer. He also worked to tighten loopholes in the the state's sex registry to ensure offenders report any changes in address or appearance to the local authorities.
Steuerwald was born on Sept. 12, 1952, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He resides in Avon with his wife, Christy. He has three grown children: Joshua Garver, D.D.S.; Jordan Gorgievski, and Adam Steuerwald.
House District 40 is located in eastern Hendricks County and consists of a large portion of Washington Townships and parts of Lincoln and Guilford townships along with the city of Avon. To find your House District, click here.

STATEHOUSE (Sept. 28, 2020) – Hendricks County lawmakers encourage local college students and recent graduates looking to gain valuable work experience to apply online for a paid internship with the Indiana House of Representatives at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

STATEHOUSE (May 27, 2020) – Local lawmakers encourage Hoosiers whose jobs were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to take advantage of tuition-free training grants offered through Indiana's Next Level Jobs program.
STATEHOUSE (April 20, 2020) – With Indiana school buildings closed for the academic year, there are several online resources available to help students continue learning at home, according to Hendricks County lawmakers.
Hendricks County natives Mariah Dragonette and Lucas Smith are gaining experience as interns with the Indiana House of Representatives during the 2020 legislative session.

STATEHOUSE (Oct. 31, 2019) – Hendricks County legislators encourage aspiring teachers planning or pursuing a degree in education to apply for the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship.
STATEHOUSE (Oct. 10, 2019) – Hendricks County communities will receive over $1.8 million in state matching grants to accelerate road and bridge improvements, according to area legislators.
STATEHOUSE (Aug. 8, 2019) – Hendricks County lawmakers invite local college students and recent graduates to apply for the Indiana House Republican Internship Program, which takes place during the 2020 legislative session at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.
STATEHOUSE (April 2, 2019) – “The intent of this bill is to cover every form of hate and treat every form of hate the same. This is the most comprehensive bias crimes statute in the country, leaving no one out. With this policy, every Hoosier will receive equal protection under the law, which is a Constitutional right, while reinforcing that bias-motivated crimes in Indiana will not be tolerated.”
STATEHOUSE (Oct. 4, 2018) – Cascade High School and Reagan Elementary School were among seven schools honored Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Education for receiving a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School Award, according to State Reps. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) and Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton).

Each year, the Indiana House of Representatives participates in the Suits and Sneakers Challenge, an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. According to the Indiana State Department of Health, 2 out of 5 Hoosiers will develop cancer in their lifetime.
STATEHOUSE (July 14, 2017) – “With the help of the Next Level Roads Plan, Hendricks County will receive nearly $124 million to use toward improving local roads and bridges. By adding more than 45 new miles of lanes and resurfacing over 100 miles of roads, these projects will help maintain our state as the Crossroads of America and take Indiana to the ‘next level.’”
