Dear Friends,
The 2016 legislative session is here and I would like your feedback on several important issues.
I am committed to keeping the momentum going this session as we work toward developing a responsible, comprehensive and sustainable plan to maintain and improve our roads and bridges. As the Crossroads of America, our infrastructure plays a key role in our state's economy.
Dear Friend,
Do you know that you have the power to save up to three lives by donating just one pint of blood?
More than 41,000 blood donations are needed everyday in the U.S., according to the American Red Cross.
Earning on-the-job work experience is an important part of building your resume and finding jobs after college graduation. One way to gain this work experience is through a paid internship with the Indiana House of Representatives.
In particular, the House Republican Internship Program provides a tremendous opportunity for students to gain experience within a variety of fields and all majors are welcome to apply. There are five different types of internships available including legislative, communications, information technology, policy and fiscal policy.
On July 1 of this year, House Enrolled Act 1305, what some are calling the left-lane law, went into effect. This newly passed legislation permits police officers to issue tickets to left-lane drivers who fail to move over into the right lane if another vehicle is overtaking them.
Within our community and state, meth continues to be a major concern. In 2014, there were more than 1,400 meth lab seizures in Indiana. In House District 82, three counties –Noble, Allen and Elkhart– were among the top 10 counties with the most lab seizures in the state.
These troubling statistics have motivated multiple state legislators to work on a variety of bills to combat meth use. Unfortunately, as state leaders, it can be challenging to find a solution that addresses drug production and abuse while limiting government infringement on law-abiding citizens.
The 2015 legislative session is over, and I am proud of the strides we made to improve our community and state. Before session began, the House Republicans vowed to pass an honestly balanced budget, increase our investment to education, strengthen our ethics laws and address some of the public safety concerns impacting Indiana. I am proud that we were able to fulfill our promises, and I would like to take this opportunity to discuss some of what we achieved to make Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family.
On May 7, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce will be announcing their rankings of the top 100 businesses that are considered the best places to work in Indiana. I am proud to say that Kendall Electric, which provides services to our community, is on this list and received this distinguished recognition.
STATEHOUSE — State Representative Dave Ober (R-Albion) congratulates the Michael and Madonna Gross family from Allen County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The award was presented by Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann at the Indiana Statehouse.
STATEHOUSE - “I was pleased to serve on the Ways and Means Committee and contribute to HB 1001, benefitting all Hoosiers. House Republicans created an honestly balanced budget that funded education and public safety priorities while maintaining Indiana’s healthy reserves.
STATEHOUSE – State Representative Dave Ober (R-Albion) authored legislation that makes changes to Indiana’s election law, most notably, straight ticket voting. House Bill (HB) 1008, co-authored by State Reps. Kathy Kreag Richardson (R-Noblesville) and Milo Smith (R-Columbus), passed out of the House with a vote of 59-35.
As a lawmaker, my goal is to author and support legislation that addresses the concerns of Hoosiers, changes our state for the better and is good, sound policy. Some of the best concepts for legislation evolves from the feedback and input I receive back in my district. House Bill (HB) 1008 is a bill that I feel meets these guidelines by working to make much needed updates to our current voting and election laws.
STATEHOUSE – State Representative Dave Ober (R-Albion) has authored a bill to address a local concern involving wineries and distilleries. House Bill (HB) 1053 would allow farm wineries, microbreweries and artisan distilleries to serve their beer, wine or liquor at the same service bar without requiring a structure to separate the service of beer and wine. The bill passed unanimously out of the Indiana House of Representatives.
STATEHOUSE – “I echo Governor Pence’s emphasis to continue increasing job opportunities for Hoosiers..."
STATEHOUSE – House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1242, co-authored by State Representative Dave Ober (R-Albion), was signed into law by Governor Pence at the 122nd Fighter Base in Fort Wayne.
The other day, I was introduced to a YouTube video created by the Cardstore. It started by introducing a fake job position for a Director of Operations and then began interviewing applicants. The position had outlandish, demanding obligations requiring the hired person to work 135 or more hours a week, remain on call at all times and in turn receive no medical or dental benefits or paid vacations.
None of the applicants interviewed in the end seemed interested. In fact, most found the position too challenging or unfair. What was the real-life position being described? Motherhood.
