Note to the Press – Please include the following statement from State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne) in your coverage of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana’s ruling regarding hemp. Judy voted for SEA 516, and supports this decision overturning portions of the new law per the court ruling:
STATEHOUSE (Sept. 19, 2019) – “It’s important that hemp is treated like any other regulated agricultural crop in Indiana, just as Congress intended with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. Ideally, this ruling will provide guidelines to the rest of the country as states begin developing or amending their current regulatory structures. If Indiana is going to continue to attract substantial investments and jobs into the state like the potential $52 million project in Jeffersonville, our laws and regulations must treat hemp like any other federally regulated agricultural crop. I look forward to ensuring the entire hemp market remains open to Hoosier farmers, small businesses and other entrepreneurs.”

While I am disappointed in the court’s decision and believe this is an issue of states’ rights, the remainder of the bill is intact and I am hopeful that the attorney general will vigorously appeal this ruling. In light of this recent action, we now have a greater duty to continue to be the voice for those unable to speak for themselves.”

While certainly disappointed, I am encouraged with the justices’ affirmation of life with its ruling regarding the humane burying or cremation of aborted babies. That is a big win for protecting the dignity of life.”

February is National Career and Technical Education Month. Also known as CTE month, this is a way to recognize the importance of programs that encourage students to explore career opportunities, and the doors it opens to employment. Northeast Indiana enjoys a rich manufacturing history and this industry currently employs almost 30 percent of our area’s workforce. But like our nation and state, our community faces a shortage of skilled tradespeople. As a lawmaker, I want to maintain northeast Indiana’s momentum by supporting legislation that provides more access to CTE.

STATEHOUSE (Aug. 13, 2018) — “Interpretation of the law is paramount as a Supreme Court Justice. While serving as a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit Court over the past 12 years, Brett Kavanaugh’s legal opinions support that assessment. Kavanaugh’s impeccable credentials should make it extremely difficult for any conscientious lawmaker to consider voting against his confirmation.”
