Biography:
State Rep. Brad Barrett graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in pre-professional studies before attending The Ohio State University's College of Medicine. He is a retired general surgeon, previously serving Wayne County for 25 years. Barrett is a former president of General Surgeons, Inc. and recently served as President of the Indiana Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
Barret's involvement in the community includes serving on the board of directors for both the Reid Health Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County. He and his wife support multiple local not-for-profits including the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Circle U Help Center and Communities In Schools.
Barrett and his wife, Mary Ann, live in Richmond and have two children, Erin and Drew.

Wayne County recently faced an unthinkable tragedy with the death of Richmond Police Department K-9 Officer Seara Burton, and I join countless others in our community and state who will remember service and sacrifice. While she's gone home for the last time, her legacy will not be forgotten.
It's no secret Hoosiers, like many Americans, face numerous health challenges like drug use, food insecurity and obesity, and high rates of smoking. Many local organizations work hard every day to tackle these issues by implementing community-driven solutions. To support local efforts and raise Hoosiers' health, Indiana is stepping up in a big way.

Across the country, disturbing reports of free speech violations on college campuses are occurring more often. In a nationwide survey by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, 60% of 20,000 U.S. college students reported that they felt they were not free to express themselves on campus for fear of retaliation from professors or administrators. In Indiana, we are facing high maternal and newborn mortality rates. While programs like the MOMS Helpline and Safety PIN are helping to reduce these rates, more can be done. The Indiana Maternal Mortality Review Committee found that 80% of pregnancy-associated deaths in 2019 were considered preventable, and 85% of deaths occurred after the birth of the child. With these findings, we are taking steps to connect more Hoosier mothers to lifesaving medical care before, during and after the births of their babies.
