I remember filling out paperwork after getting ready to start officer training school back in 2005, and other people were passing around a paper that had all the states that exempted you from the individual income tax. Other people were saying you needed to put down one of those states as your home of record. To me, it was so foreign to put any other state but Indiana down.
According to the Indiana Department of Correction, nearly 80% of inmates in Indiana jails have an addiction or mental health condition, and 75% of those who return to prison have a substance use disorder. As lawmakers, we rely heavily on input from constituents and local leaders to learn how we can better serve our communities. Oftentimes, what starts out as a conversation can turn into legislation, which is introduced to the General Assembly and hopefully carried across the finish line to become law. After listening to several Hoosiers in our district express an urgent need for more support for public safety officers, I knew this needed to be a top priority of mine during the 2021 legislative session. Law enforcement officers put on their uniform and head to work every day not knowing what their next shift will have in store for them. More collaboration and communication between Central Indiana counties are required to eradicate the plague of violence in our community.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth became a more common way to continue serving patients while also mitigating the spread of the virus. To make this possible, Indiana took steps to cut red tape and allow providers to see patients virtually for certain conditions. Legislation I am supporting this session would work to make some of those temporary changes we saw last spring permeant, and would even expand them to include more health care professionals.

Each year, dedicated men and women choose to serve and protect our State by joining one of our many outstanding law enforcement agencies. Often, these public servants put on their uniform and have no idea what their next shift could entail. From responding to a dangerous situation, to providing first aid before medics arrive, our local law enforcement officers serve as part of the fabric of our community and they deserve the critical resources they need to protect Hoosiers. I also believe in working with our public safety officials to increase accountability and transparency for all departments.
