Unlocking Financial Aid for Continuing Education

The 2027-28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open. Millions of dollars in state aid, as well as more than $1 billion in federal aid, are available to Hoosier students seeking to continue their education at colleges, universities and vocational schools. Filing the FAFSA as early as possible increases your chances of receiving the full amount of eligible aid.

Since the General Assembly passed a law in 2023 requiring high school seniors, with opt-out provisions, to complete and submit the FAFSA, Indiana has seen a consistent increase in filings. This year the state exceeded its 60% filing goal for the second straight year, meaning more students have access to financial support for post-secondary education.

The FAFSA now has a Real Time Processing feature where students can view their confirmed Student Aid Index, Federal Pell Grant eligibility and any errors that need corrected upon filing. State and institutional financial aid, including the Frank O'Bannon Grant and 21st Century Scholars award, will still require additional processing time.

Indiana is working to keep college accessible and affordable for Hoosier students and families. In addition to freezing in-state tuition at every state public college and university for two straight years, Indiana leads the nation in the percentage of high school students completing at least one college course, with the average student earning 15 college credits, saving them time and money.

As a result of a law the General Assembly passed in 2024, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education recently reported the largest number yet of Hoosier high schools offering Indiana College Core, where students can earn up to a full year of college credits that transfer to all state public colleges and universities and well as 11 private institutions.

Students and their families needing assistance filing the FAFSA or learning about financial aid can visit LearnMoreIndiana.org and connect with their Regional Outreach Coordinator. The website is also a great resource for help choosing a college and career/technical education. INvestEd is another in-state option that helps students navigate their post-graduation education plans.

House Republicans will continue to focus on reducing the cost of higher education and helping ensure college and post-secondary training programs lead to meaningful career opportunities for Hoosiers.
