Halloween is just around the corner, and young Hoosiers are getting ready for costumes, candy and spooky fun! Before heading out for a night of trick-or-treating, take a few simple precautions to help keep everyone safe. The Indiana State Police offers several tips for families to keep in mind this Halloween.
- Choose a safe costume. Make sure costumes fit properly and are short enough to avoid tripping or falling. Consider using nontoxic face paint instead of a mask, which can obstruct a child's vision. Light-colored costumes and reflective tape on clothing or treat bags can also help children stand out to drivers after dark.
- Plan your trick-or-treating route. Young children should always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Older children should travel with friends, follow a planned route and let parents know where they will be. Stick to familiar homes with their outside lights on and follow your community's designated trick-or-treating hours.
- Stay alert around traffic. Use sidewalks whenever possible and cross streets carefully, preferably at designated crosswalks. Drivers should also slow down and remain especially alert in residential neighborhoods.
- Inspect treats before enjoying them. Wait until you get home before eating candy or other treats. Have an adult inspect everything in a well-lit area and eat only unopened candy and treats in their original packaging. Discard anything that appears tampered with or questionable.
- Remember stranger safety. Remind children never to enter a stranger's home or vehicle. Make sure they know how to contact you or another trusted adult if they become separated from their group or need help.
With a little preparation and a few simple precautions, families can focus on what makes Halloween special: creative costumes, neighborhood fun and plenty of treats.
