Stay Prepared for Severe Weather

Recently, two Lake Village residents tragically lost their lives in a tornado that touched down in northwest Indiana. A series of severe storms swept across Indiana, bringing large hail and devastating tornadoes that injured others, destroyed or damaged hundreds of structures and left thousands without power.

With the transition from winter to spring often including dangerous weather like thunderstorms and tornadoes, it's important that Hoosiers be prepared. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security partners with the National Weather Service to share preparedness tips to minimize the risk of harm or death in severe weather.

Practice the following tips to prepare for severe weather events:

  • Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including phone alerts and a NOAA weather radio.
  • Understand the difference between a watch (be prepared) and a warning (take action).
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Never drive through flooded roadways.
  • Know your safe shelter location, such as a basement or interior room away from windows.
  • Prepare an emergency kit and family communication plan before storms develop.

Homeowners who suffer storm damage are encouraged to call 2-1-1 or visit the Indiana 211 website to report damages and get help with assessments. Click here to submit a disaster damage assessment form.
