Raising Awareness, Supporting Breast Cancer Research

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize those affected by the disease, encourage early detection and highlight efforts to improve treatment options. Indiana will continue to support that work through legislation advancing cancer research while providing resources to help Hoosiers access screenings.

In 2025, House Republicans passed House Enrolled Act 1453 to establish the Breast Cancer Research Fund and the Pediatric Cancer Research and Treatment Grant Program. The law supports grant funding for innovative research and new treatment options, with the goal of improving outcomes for patients and families across the state. In 2024, House Republicans passed a bipartisan law requiring breast density notifications and clarifying coverage for reconstructive procedures after a mastectomy.

While research is important to developing better treatments, early detection remains a key part of breast cancer care. Regular screenings can help identify breast cancer before symptoms appear. Hoosiers should talk with their health care providers about their personal risk factors and when to begin screening.

Indiana offers resources to help residents access breast cancer screenings. The Indiana Breast and Cervical Cancer Program provides free or low-cost screening services to eligible residents who meet age, income and insurance requirements. Services may include mammograms and diagnostic testing.

To learn more about eligibility and available services, visit the Indiana Department of Health’s early detection webpage. Hoosiers can also explore free mammogram options through the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also an opportunity to support patients, survivors and families affected by the disease. Through continued research, early detection and access to screenings, Indiana can help Hoosiers take proactive steps toward better health.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hoosiers are encouraged to prioritize regular screenings, learn about their risk and support continued efforts to improve treatment options. To learn more about legislation supporting cancer research, visit iga.in.gov.
