Lawmakers Lead Diesel Relief Efforts for Farmers

Recently the governor announced the state will suspend the special fuel restrictions for off-road diesel, allowing Indiana farmers to use tax-free, dyed diesel in agriculture operations. This comes after House Republicans authored a letter to Gov. Mike Braun to provide diesel relief to Hoosier farmers.

Indiana is seeing its highest ever recorded price for diesel fuel at almost $7 a gallon, with some areas of the state topping the $7 mark. Farmers are disproportionately impacted by these rising costs with standard agricultural operations during the harvest season using thousands of gallons of diesel.

Indiana farmers are essential to our economy, our communities and our food supply. Providing relief from high diesel costs during harvest season will help ease the burden on our farmers while supporting an industry that benefits every Hoosier.

The governor suspended Indiana's gas usage tax starting in April to address rising costs and reduce the strain on millions of Hoosiers, expanding the relief in May to include the gas excise tax. Those efforts led to Indiana having the lowest gas prices in the nation. Diesel prices, however, have remained high which is placing a significant burden on farmers during harvest season.

This cooperation between the legislative and executive branches will help alleviate this burden and support Hoosier agriculture.
