Indiana Sees Major Decline in Veteran Homelessness

Indiana is making progress in reducing veteran homelessness and connecting veterans with resources they need.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, veteran homelessness in Indiana decreased by 18.7% in 2025 compared to the previous year, the second-largest percentage decline among states nationwide.

Indiana supports veterans through programs that help provide housing stability. The Grants for Veterans’ Services program provides funding to nonprofits that assist veterans with housing and other needs. The Military Family Relief Fund also helps veterans and their families with expenses such as housing and utilities.

House Republicans are also working to improve housing affordability for veterans. This past legislative session, lawmakers passed expanded property tax relief for Hoosier veterans, including a 100 percent property tax deduction for totally disabled veterans.

• Veterans Crisis Line: Veterans can call 988 and press 1 to connect with confidential support from trained crisis responders.
• Veterans Affairs’ S.A.V.E. training: This training helps individuals recognize warning signs of suicide and learn how to support someone who may be struggling. S.A.V.E. stands for Spot, Ask, Validate and Encourage.
• HereNOW Help: This free mental wellness app is available to veterans.
