Communities are encouraged to apply for the next round of funding from the Residential Housing Infrastructure Assistance Program (RIF) before the Oct. 6 deadline. This program helps local governments finance critical infrastructure projects that make residential housing developments more affordable and achievable.
Designed to address Indiana's growing housing needs, RIF reduces costs and removes barriers that often slow down development. Municipal governments can apply for low-interest loans to cover expenses such as electric and gas distribution lines, projects that are essential but can be costly for communities to fund on their own.
House Enrolled Act 1005, a House Republican priority bill this year, supports the program by streamlining the regulatory process to remove costly delays to housing development. Communities that adopt pro-housing policies will receive priority consideration for funding.
The program provided more than $82 million during the first two rounds of the program, creating more than 3,000 housing units in several Hoosier communities. Under the new state budget, $50 million is being appropriated to the program over the next two years to continue supporting housing growth in Indiana.
