Empowering Hoosier Families

Every Hoosier deserves the freedom, dignity and independence to choose how they receive care in their own homes. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work for every family, and through Indiana's Department of Family and Social Services Administration there is a flexible option called INCharge Self-Directed Services.

Self-directed care is an empowering option built into several Indiana Medicaid waivers. Instead of relying on traditional home-care agencies, you have control. You gain employer authority and the freedom to choose your own team and schedule and direct your own care. These services are available across several state programs, including the Family Support Waiver (FSW), Community Integration and Habilitation (CIH) waiver, Health and Wellness (H&W) waiver, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) waiver, and the PathWays for Aging program.

As you are in control, you'll be in charge of things like:

  • Writing job descriptions;
  • Interviewing and hiring;
  • Deciding how much to pay;
  • Training your self-directed workers;
  • Setting and monitoring work schedules;
  • Supervising your self-directed workers;
  • Having a back-up plan; and
  • Firing self-directed workers, if necessary.
