Combating Hoosier veteran homelessness

This month, Helping Veterans and Families of Indiana (HVAF) celebrated the renovation of the Manchester Apartments North Tower, a veteran housing unit destroyed in an accidental fire last year.  Legislators and local leaders were invited to see the restored facility and learn more about the fight to end homelessness for Hoosier veterans.

Every year, 500 veterans experience homelessness in Indiana. HVAF, a local nonprofit veteran organization, is dedicated to helping Hoosier veterans with homelessness through temporary housing, employment, access to food and outreach.

In October of 2024, a fire at HVAF's largest veteran housing facility in downtown Indianapolis left 48 veterans displaced.  As a result, the Indiana House of Representatives launched a donation drive collecting essential items such as food, clothes, hygiene products and more. The drive collected over 250 lbs. of food and essential items to support Hoosier veterans in need.
