Note to the Press – Local lawmakers issued the following statements in response to the U.S. Supreme Court reversing its decision on Roe v. Wade and returning the issue of abortion back to the states. State legislators are expected to take action to further protect life when they return to the Statehouse for a special session. Gov. Eric Holcomb recently announced his call for lawmakers to reconvene on July 6 and provide $1 billion in inflation relief to Hoosier taxpayers due to higher-than-expected revenue collections. Details of the special session have not yet been announced. Updates will be posted to the Indiana General Assembly's website at iga.in.gov.
STATEHOUSE (June 24, 2022) – "The Supreme Court's decision today opened the door for states to enact stronger pro-life legislation for the first time in over 50 years. I look forward to returning to the Statehouse, and protecting the sanctity of life as well as supporting new and expectant moms," said State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne).
"This historic Supreme Court decision is an incredible victory for life and now we'll have a chance to reaffirm our commitment to protecting it. There are passionate voices on all sides of this issue, and I plan to join my colleagues at the Statehouse to have a thoughtful debate about how Indiana can better protect the unborn and pregnant women," said State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne).
"Now is the time to take action and protect innocent lives across our state. I look forward to passing meaningful legislation that's reflective of our commitment to upholding the sanctity of life while also supporting pregnant mothers," said State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne).
