STATEHOUSE – House Speaker Brian C. Bosma (R-Indianapolis) has appointed Dr. Byron L. Ernest to serve as a member of the Indiana State Board of Education (SBOE).

Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 1 provides for legislative appointments to the SBOE from the Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives as well as the President Pro Tempore of the Indiana State Senate. This will allow legislators to have increased input in the development of education policy in Indiana. SEA 1 will improve the autonomy of the SBOE and will ensure that Hoosier students have access to the best education possible.

Dr. Ernest is currently the Head of Schools for Hoosier Academies in Indiana. Previously, Dr. Ernest was the principal at Emmerich Manual High School (EMHS) in Indianapolis, which was a school taken over by the state after failing for seven years in a row, often referred to as a Turnaround Academy. Dr. Ernest was charged with leading a new staff and developing a culture of excellence where high student achievement and performance are the norm. Manual was taken off the “F” list under Ernest’s leadership and has the distinction of being the only takeover school in Indiana to be removed from the failing category. Prior to going to EMHS, Dr. Ernest was the Department Head for Agriculture and FFA at Lebanon Community School Corporation.

“Dr. Ernest has been a strong agent of education improvement for our state. Over the years, I have had the privilege of getting to know Byron and have personally called on him to weigh in on how best to bring excellence to every classroom for every Hoosier,” said Speaker Bosma. “One thing remains true: a great teacher is the single most important indicator of success for each student. I look forward to the positive transformation that Byron will bring.”

Dr. Ernest holds Bachelor of Science degrees from Purdue University in Animal Science and Agricultural Education. He also received his Master’s Degree in Education from Purdue University. He received his Doctorate from Walden University in Administrator Leadership for Teaching and Learning. Currently, Dr. Ernest is completing Post-Doctoral Professional Programs in Leadership at Harvard University. He was named Indiana Teacher of the Year in 2010.

Dr. Ernest will be present at the next SBOE meeting on June 3, 2015 in West Lafayette, Ind.
