Last Thursday I was among many volunteers who had the privilege of participating in Greene County’s Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, an event for which we marched a mile around the courthouse square to raise awareness about the growing problem of sexual assaults – men marching in heels, women in men’s footwear.

April was Sexual Assault awareness month, and as a legislator it is important to me to help pass laws that will help protect Hoosiers. This past legislative session, the Indiana General Assembly passed a human trafficking bill that was needed to be ‘fast tracked’ because of the urgency of the Super Bowl and all of the crime that surrounds such a large sporting event.

Every 45 seconds, someone in America is sexually assaulted, and in Indiana 14.4 percent of women has been raped at some time in their lifetime. These numbers are too high and are in need of our attention.
