STATEHOUSE— House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) appointed State Representative Matt Ubelhor (R-Bloomfield) to serve on the Military Base Planning Council.
“While the next legislative session won’t convene until next year, my colleagues and I are prepared to get to work on these issues facing our communities,” said Rep. Ubelhor. “The interim is a time where we can take a closer look at things we were not able to accomplish during session, while establishing a base for the work we will accomplish in 2014.”
Every year after the legislative session is completed, the Legislative Council meets to assign topics for study during the interim as well as establish any new interim committee that is needed to examine a particular issue. Most interim committees will begin meeting in July with their work wrapping up toward the end of October.
Interim committees are an integral part of the legislative process. Even though session is adjourned for 2013, legislators will continue their duties by conducting in-depth studies of various topics assigned to their committees. Interim committees with specific expertise receive public testimony and work out the details of proposed legislation before it is introduced in the 2014 session.
“I am honored to be a part of the Military Base Planning Council and discuss issues facing Hoosier servicemen and women and our armed forces,” said Rep. Ubelhor. “Hoosiers understand and are proud of those who serve to protect our freedoms and democracy, and Indiana is working to do everything it can to make sure returning veterans seamlessly transition to civilian life and our armed forces have the necessary available resources.”
