STATEHOUSE (Jan. 9, 2024) – The House Roads and Transportation Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to advance a resolution authored by State Rep. Mike Speedy (R-Indianapolis) to rename a section of I-74 after fallen Marion County Sheriff's Deputy John Durm.

Speedy said the resolution would rename a mile of I-74 between I-465 and Acton Road in Indianapolis the "Deputy John Durm Memorial Mile."

"It's fitting that this resolution to honor Deputy Durm advanced on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day," Speedy said. "While his family, and his brothers and sisters in the sheriff's office continue to mourn his loss, it's important to honor his work and life in this way."

Durm, a 38-year veteran of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, was fatally strangled by a detainee when transporting the inmate from Eskenazi Hospital to the Adult Detention Center in Indianapolis last May.

House Concurrent Resolution 2 now heads to the full House for consideration. If the resolution passes through the General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Transportation can move forward with the road renaming in Marion County.
